About The Project
Historical Audio > About the Project
Voices of the past have so much to say to us today, and should be preserved for tomorrow. United Methodist Communications, in conjunction with the United Methodist General Commission on Archives and History, is working to preserve precious audio resources of the church.
Audiotapes at the United Methodist Archives and at seminaries across the country have been sitting on shelves, silently protecting the voices of theologians, professors, and leaders of both church and society. In this project, the tapes are shipped to United Methodist Communications in Nashville TN where they are digitized and the audio is preserved on gold archive CDs. A master CD is kept in Nashville and another is sent to the United Methodist Archives in New Jersey. The original tapes are returned to the libraries that supplied them along with a CD of the program.
Whenever legally possible, audio programs are made available to hear on this website. In this way, students can hear voices they otherwise can only imagine as they read the words on paper. Here, you can listen to lectures and sermons and radio programs from times long past. Programs not available online can still be heard in the library of the institution that provided the original tape.
This project prevents the loss of these audio programs, but for only a limited time. It will be up to future generations to take the audio we have saved as .wav files on CDs and re-save them to new generations of technology. In the meantime, they are here, ready to engage your mind and enrich your own search for wisdom in the theology and history of The United Methodist Church.
